One screen, one button

Simple mode is the whole free app: find the Mac, check your level, hit start. There is nothing else to understand, and nothing to get wrong. While it runs it shows the two numbers that actually matter — the delay at the Mac, and how many dropouts you have taken.

It measures your phone instead of guessing

Android offers the same capture modes on every device, but what each one really does — which microphones it opens, how much processing it adds, how many channels you actually get — is undocumented and different on every phone.

So Micyfi opens each one and measures it. The list is what your phone reported, not a spec sheet: how many genuine microphones each mode yields, and how strongly the two channels correlate.

Any microphone you can attach

The built-in mics, a USB audio interface, a wired headset, Bluetooth earbuds — if the phone can capture it, Micyfi can send it. USB interfaces get the good path: an exclusive low-latency stream with no automatic gain and no noise suppression between the converter and the wire.

You can change microphone, latency and format while streaming. The session reconfigures in place rather than restarting.

On the Mac, it is just an input device

A small menu-bar app runs the receiver. It shows which phones are connected, which channels they landed on, and keeps them in sync with each other. No window, no dock icon, nothing to manage.

Everything else is ordinary macOS: pick the device as your input in whatever app you already use.

Latency is a choice, not a lottery

Every profile is a buffer on the Mac trading delay against dropouts. Auto tightens while the link stays clean and backs off when it does not. Fixed is the one for acoustical measurement: its delay never moves, because a delay that changes cannot be subtracted.

Up to 32 phones, and they cannot drift apart

Each phone takes the next free stereo pair on your loopback device, so a 16-channel one carries eight of them and a 64-channel one carries 32. Wi-Fi and USB phones mix freely.

Because every phone is resampled onto the same device clock, they cannot drift apart over a long take. Keep phones in sync also equalises their buffer depths — measured 50 ms apart with it off, 0.57 ms with it on.

Linear-phase EQ and pitch, on the phone

Five bands with peak, shelf, low-pass and high-pass shapes, and an FIR length you choose from 256 to 4096 taps. Linear phase means the correction does not smear transients — and the app tells you exactly how much delay the filter costs before you commit to it.

PCM or Opus, your call

Raw PCM is the most direct thing you can send. Opus costs about 2.5 ms of encoding delay and removes roughly 90% of the data — worth it on a busy network or with several phones sharing one, pointless on a clean 5 GHz link or over USB.

Packet size, bitrate and encoder complexity are all yours in Expert mode.

Read them together: the top ruler is how far behind you are, the bottom is how much that distance wanders. A wire wins both.

Drift is the thing that ruins a long recording, and it is the thing Micyfi is built around. Two crystals that differ by 50 ppm slide about 20 ms apart every three minutes. Micyfi measures the clock ratio and feeds a variable-ratio resampler, which brought the wired residual to +3.6 ± 3.2 ppm — indistinguishable from zero.

And the honest part: over Wi-Fi the delay holds steady while the link does, but every dropout steps it by roughly 18 ms and it does not come straight back. For anything where timing must not move — acoustical measurement above all — use a wire and the Fixed profile. Wi-Fi is for talking, streaming and recording; it is not for measuring.

Installation

Three steps, once.

Fifteen minutes, most of which is Homebrew downloading.

  1. Install a virtual audio device

    macOS has no way for an app to publish a new microphone without a driver, so Micyfi uses a loopback device that you install. BlackHole is free and the one we test against:

    The channel count is how many phones you can run at once — 16 channels is eight phones, 64 is thirty-two. Micyfi finds the device by itself; you never configure it.

  2. Install Micyfi on the Mac

    Free, for everyone — the Mac side is never the paid part. Open the disk image, drag Micyfi.app onto Applications and launch it. A microphone icon appears in your menu bar and goes green when a phone is connected. That is the entire Mac interface — there is no window.

    The first launch will be refused, because this build is not yet signed with an Apple developer certificate. macOS will say it cannot verify the developer. To allow it: open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll to the bottom, and click Open Anyway next to the message about Micyfi. You only do this once. On macOS 15 and later this is the only route — the old right-click-and-Open trick no longer works.

  3. Install the Android app and pair once

    The Mac menu shows a six-digit pairing code. Type it into the app once and both ends remember it. Without a matching code the receiver refuses the session, which is what stops anyone else on the network claiming your microphone.

Then, in any app: choose your loopback device — BlackHole 16ch, for example — as the input. Zoom, OBS, Logic, QuickTime, REW and everything else treat it as an ordinary microphone, because that is exactly what it is.

Micyfi ships no audio driver of its own, on purpose. Using the loopback device you already have means nothing gets installed into /Library by us, there is no uninstaller to run, and you are not limited to two channels.

FAQ

Reasonable questions.

Why do I have to install BlackHole?

macOS will not let an app publish a new microphone to other apps without a driver living in the system. Rather than ship one — which would mean a system install, an uninstaller, and a fixed channel count — Micyfi renders into a loopback device you install yourself and finds it automatically. You get more channels and we get to stay out of your system folders.

How much latency should I expect?

Over USB, around 105 ms round trip with under a millisecond of variation. Over Wi-Fi it depends entirely on your network — typically two to four times that, and the radio decides, not the app. If the number matters to you, use a cable.

Is my audio sent anywhere?

No. Audio goes from your phone to your Mac, over your own network or a cable. There is no server, no account, and no telemetry. The pairing code exists so that nobody else on your network can connect to your receiver.

Does the free version stop working?

No. Simple mode is complete and permanent — no trial period, no watermark, no recording limit. Pro adds controls; it does not switch anything back on.

How do I buy Pro, and what if I change phone?

There is one app, not two. Install the free one, open the tier menu in the top right and tap Advanced or Expert — the padlock opens a sheet with the price in your own currency. It is a one-time purchase through Google Play, not a subscription.

Play holds the receipt against your Google account, so a new phone, a factory reset or a reinstall restores it: the same sheet has a Restore purchase button if it does not happen by itself. There is no licence key to keep and no account to make with us.

Do I need Developer Options on my phone?

Only for the adb-based USB mode. Wi-Fi needs nothing at all, and USB tethering — which is the better wired option anyway — needs nothing either: macOS creates the network interface itself and Micyfi finds your Mac on it.

Windows or Linux?

Not today. The receiver is macOS-only, built on CoreAudio. The phone app is Android; there is no iOS version.

Can I really run several phones at once?

Yes, and it is easier than it sounds — every phone is pulled by one render callback on one device clock, so they physically cannot drift apart. A 16-channel loopback device carries eight phones, a 64-channel one carries thirty-two.
